Some businesses stop being service providers and become the mandatory rails for an entire economy. We call this the Infrastructure Toll-Gate. When a utility becomes non-discretionary, the investment thesis shifts from growth potential to rent collection.

MTN Nigeria illustrates this transition. The company reported a 59.4% increase in pre-tax profit to N1.80 trillion for the first nine months of 2026. This was driven by a 35.8% surge in data revenue. Data is no longer a luxury in Lagos. It is the primary medium for commerce.

The strength of a toll-gate lies in its operating leverage against inflation. MTN maintained a 56.9% EBITDA margin while revenue hit N4.61 trillion. By shifting to fixed-rate, naira-denominated debt, they removed the currency friction that destroys regional operators. They are capturing the productivity of the informal economy moving online.

With 94.7 million subscribers, the network effect is a barrier to entry. The market is repricing these assets. They are no longer just equities. They are sovereign-grade infrastructure.

This model only breaks under aggressive regulatory price caps. If the rails cannot be priced to match inflation, the gate becomes a liability. For now, the volume floor remains intact.
