Index breadth is a measure of risk distribution
Index levels vs Market Conviction
Written by Olumide Olusegun, Founder & Managing Director, Splitbox Limited.
Index breadth is a measure of risk distribution.
Splitbox Journal • Principle of Capital
An index reaches record highs while most components retreat. When capital clusters in a few large caps to avoid a broader sell off, the market becomes more expensive and less liquid simultaneously. This is the breadth liquidity trap.
Market capitalization is often mistaken for market conviction. A rising headline figure masks an enclosure where exit depth for smaller tickers vanishes. The index becomes a weighted average of outliers rather than a reflection of the economy.
Disciplined allocators discount index level momentum. They treat headline gains as noise when negative breadth persists. Success requires a pivot from tracking the index to assessing the idiosyncratic risk of individual tickers.
