The Structural Expansion of Equity Capital.
Splitbox Journal • Capital Notes
Liquidity in the Nigerian equity market is no longer merely a function of shifting sentiment.
MarketForces Africa reports that the Nigerian Exchange market capitalization is nearing the N160 trillion threshold. This growth is predominantly driven by new share listings. For the disciplined allocator, this shift from secondary market speculation to primary market expansion signals a maturing financial infrastructure.
Recent banking stock rallies suggest that institutional capital is concentrating within Tier-1 lenders. This appears to be a defensive repositioning ahead of the Central Bank of Nigeria recapitalization requirements. Capital is gravitating toward systemic institutions with the governance structures to navigate domestic macro volatility.
Success in this cycle will depend on underwriting the quality of these new listings. While CBN Governor Cardoso aims to return the economy to single-digit inflation, the current market depth provides a necessary buffer. We view this expansion as an institutionalization of the local exchange. It creates a broader base for long-term capital formation.
