Nominal price acts as a filter for duration.
Splitbox Journal • Principle of Capital
High nominal share prices are a tool for governance. Sterling Financial Holdings relisted on the NGX at N77.00 following a 1-for-10 reconstruction. The math is mechanical. The intent is a strategic eviction of retail volatility. By raising the entry floor, an issuer creates a gate that favors institutional duration over speculative churn.
A tighter float requires higher conviction. When you remove the retail trader who cannot afford a round lot at N77.00, you remove the first person to sell on a headline. This is a deliberate narrowing of the gate. It trades volume for stability. It replaces the noise of the crowd with the silence of the vault.
There is a hidden cost to this enclosure. A thinner market creates a wider bid-ask spread. While the share price looks stable, the exit becomes narrow. Investors must now decide if the reduced float creates a scarcity premium or a liquidity trap. In a market with few buyers, the appearance of stability is often an illusion.
