Redundancy as a Strategic Requirement.

For a long-term capital allocator, infrastructure is not just a facilitator of volume but a study in physical risk.
Situation The Federal Ministry of Works announced that the First Niger Bridge will be closed for emergency maintenance from September 7 to September 21, 2026. Nairametrics reports that the closure is necessitated by deterioration and the activities of scavengers who removed critical bridge components including bolts and iron rods. Motorists are directed to use the Second Niger Bridge as a diversion.
What we know Public assets in this corridor face a persistent Scrap Value Arbitrage. When the immediate market value of raw materials like steel truss nuts and bolts exceeds the perceived utility of a functioning bridge to local actors, the integrity of the asset becomes unstable. This is a clear example of the Security Elasticity of Physical Assets. The value of an infrastructure project in Nigeria is increasingly tied to the cost of protecting it from its own environment.
What we do not know We lack clarity on the long-term structural health of the first bridge beyond these emergency repairs. We also do not know the exact economic toll this two-week friction will take on local supply chains that are not optimized for the diversion, despite the availability of the second crossing.
What we would do We advise our partners to view redundancy not as a luxury or a vanity project, but as a mandatory insurance premium. Underwriting any industrial or logistics project in the South-East or South-South axis requires pricing in a Security Tax. This covers both the private protection of goods and the inevitable operational delays caused by the cannibalization of public infrastructure. The Second Niger Bridge is the only reason the regional economy remains coupled during this window.
