Scale is often mistaken for health.

The Nigerian Exchange reached N160.52 trillion on October 23. A single day added N1.47 trillion. This is not a broad market recovery. It is a Liquidity Trap of Scale.

Large institutional allocators are now forced into a handful of blue-chips. The rest of the market lacks the depth to handle their entry or exit. This creates a self-fulfilling but fragile price bubble in names like Dangote Cement and First Holdco.

This expansion is a Liquidity Enclosure. Domestic capital faces currency volatility and few institutional-grade alternatives. It crowds into the only tickers deep enough to facilitate movement. First Holdco recorded a 63 percent leap in nine-month profit. This provides a thin fundamental cover for a structural necessity.

Consensus views this as a bull market. They are wrong. This is a nominal surge driven by currency devaluation and a lack of domestic investment vehicles. It is not a fundamental increase in productivity.

We view this milestone as a flight to quality assets acting as a naira proxy. Rebalance portfolios to account for this heavyweight distortion. The real risk-adjusted story is hidden in the stagnant sovereign bond index.

Discipline requires recognizing the risk is no longer market-wide. It is concentrated in the governance of two or three entities. When an index relies on a few names for liquidity, scale becomes a liability.
