It is easy to mistake the expansion of a single private balance sheet for a national industrial recovery.

Nairametrics reports that Nigeria's oil refining sector grew by 43.94% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026. This figure was released by the National Bureau of Statistics on August 31. The primary driver is the Dangote refinery reaching a crude processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day. On paper, the industrial sector is surging. In reality, we are witnessing a statistical event rather than a systemic trend.

When one company represents almost the entirety of a sector's growth, the resulting data masks stagnation everywhere else. For a capital allocator, this is a signal to look past the headline percentage. If you strip away this single refinery, the broader manufacturing landscape in Nigeria remains constrained by the same energy costs and logistics bottlenecks that have existed for years.

We are shifting from a raw material export model to a value-added one, which is progress. However, relying on one plant to carry the national GDP narrative creates a massive sensitivity to a single point of failure. If that plant stops, the national growth rate collapses. Real industrial health requires a high number of mid-sized operators, not just one giant that moves the needle by itself.

Building a business in this environment means focusing on the derivatives of this growth. The real opportunity is not in the refining itself, but in the logistics and petrochemical layers that can now form around it. We should celebrate the 43.94% growth, but we must underwrite our investments as if it does not exist for the rest of the market.

Concentrated success is often a mask for broad structural fragility.
