Record nominal profits mask the erosion of operational efficiency.

Guaranty Trust Holding Company reported a pre-tax profit of N603.03 billion for the half-year ended June 2026. This figure is historically high. It represents a marginal increase of only 0.35 percent from the previous year.

The signal is not the scale of the profit. The signal is the stagnation of growth despite a high-interest environment.

Interest expense surged by 24.24 percent to N223.79 billion. The cost of funds is rising faster than the ability to deploy them. The era of easy margins driven by currency volatility is over.

Interest costs grew nearly eight times faster than gross earnings. The bank is no longer a growth engine. It is a utility managing a high-yield sovereign portfolio.

Earnings per share declined by 17.73 percent to N11.18. This is a disconnect between corporate activity and shareholder value. The N1.00 interim dividend is a defensive yield.

The bank is paying to maintain its status as a proxy for the Nigerian sovereign stack. Loans to customers grew only 0.48 percent since December 2025.

This pivot away from private sector credit reflects a cautious stance. Even efficient operators struggle to find bankable growth outside of government paper.

High interest rates are cannibalizing the bottom line. Funding costs are rising. Non-interest income is weakening.

The premium for banking efficiency has shifted. It no longer belongs to those who grow. It belongs to those who can protect margins.

Capital discipline requires looking past the headlines. The real value is contracting.
