Smuggling as price discovery

The Myth of the Refinery Dividend.
Splitbox Journal • Market Myths
Local production does not cure price volatility.
Recent reports highlight a 30% to 50% price premium in neighboring nations. This gap creates a gravity that physical supply cannot overcome. When a refinery blames smuggling for high domestic prices, it is acknowledging that regional arbitrage is stronger than national sentiment.
Smuggling is a rational market response to a price disparity. It is not a security failure. If a domestic market requires a closed loop to function, investors are not underwriting industrial efficiency. They are underwriting a state-enforced market distortion.
We call this the Security Tax. It is the cost of trying to keep a commodity below its regional market value. This tax is paid through leakage, enforcement costs, and permanent margin erosion.
Investors must discount the refinery dividend in every portfolio company. Real stability only arrives at regional parity. Until then, leakage is a fixed cost of doing business.
