Prizes validate scientific rigor. They rarely predict commercial survival.

The 2026 Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation awarded to GenScan AI for reducing MRI scan times by 90 percent is a technical triumph. For a founder, it is a trap.

Increasing MRI speed by 10x only creates value if the hospital administrative workflow can handle a 10x increase in patient volume. Most cannot. If the referral desk, the billing department, and the radiologist's reporting time remain static, the 90 percent time saving is wasted at the bottleneck.

Founders must evaluate technology by integration cost rather than novelty. If a solution requires new proprietary hardware, the sovereign discount makes the import cost prohibitive. The procurement cycle is too long. The capital is too expensive.

True innovation in resource-constrained markets optimizes existing asset utilization. It is a software layer, not a hardware replacement. It fits the existing operational stack without demanding a total system rebuild.

Efficiency is measured by the lack of friction, not the complexity of the code.
