A permanent floor for operational costs
Wage awards and the permanent reset of labor costs

A permanent floor for operational costs.

Wage awards are not cushions. They are a permanent upward reset of the labor cost floor. Consensus treats these payments as temporary relief for fuel price spikes. This is a modeling error. Once a nominal wage floor rises in this market, it never retreats, even if energy prices stabilize.
The NLC demand for 'Naira-for-Crude' pricing is a hidden call for a dual exchange rate system by stealth. It seeks to decouple industrial inputs from market reality. If granted, it will distort industrial pricing further and create a new layer of rent-seeking that operators cannot hedge.
For an executive, this is an unhedged tax on future margins. The immediate task is to audit the transportation-to-salary ratio of your bottom-quartile earners. If their commute costs exceed 30% of take-home pay, your labor stability is an illusion.
Model the impact of a 20% wage award on your FY27 EBITDA now. The floor has moved. Adjust the spreadsheet or lose the margin.
