Mass ownership is often discussed as a tool for wealth creation, but for an operator, it is a tool for defense.
Nairametrics reports that Dangote Refinery has set a minimum subscription of only 10 shares at N5,250. This N2.15 trillion IPO is not just seeking capital. By targeting ten million retail investors, the firm is building a social license that acts as a human shield against future sovereign interference.
Ten million small shareholders in Nigeria are functionally silent in the boardroom, yet they are loud in the political arena. This fragmentation dilutes institutional oversight while making the asset politically expensive to tax or nationalize. A disciplined allocator sees past the democratization narrative. True governance requires concentrated accountability, not a fragmented base that provides cover for a dominant founder.
